Commonly used CNC cutting methods

CNC cutting is a processing method that applies CNC technology to achieve the precise control over tolerances during the processing process, creating products with optimal finishing and high productivity. CNC metal cutting stands out as the most widely adopted method in mechanical processing enterprises. This article will help you have a clear understanding of two CNC cutting methods: CNC wire cutting and CNC plasma cutting.

1. CNC technology in metal processing

CNC involves the use of computer programming to control metal processing machinery and equipment. Metals processed through CNC methods achieve a surface quality that satisfies the strict requirements of the market. Businesses choose CNC machining over traditional techniques due to its numerous benefits:

  • High precision
  • Fast cutting speed
  • Short processing time/01product
  • Minimize the common rough processing process

Common types of materials used in CNC cutting methods include corrugated iron sheets, iron, stainless steel, aluminum, and steel. Based on the surface requirements of the product, the shape, size of the part/mold, the processing facility will choose the appropriate CNC method:

  • CNC mechanical machining without workpieces: Punching, hot machining, pressure machining to create rough products for the detailed cutting stage;
  • Cutting mechanical machining: Turning, grinding, milling (e.g.: CNC gear machining)
  • CNC laser machining: CO2 laser cutting, Fiber laser cutting (e.g.: CNC iron cutting, CNC aluminum cutting)
  • CNC plasma machining etc.;

2. CNC wire cutting

Wire cutting machining (EDM) is a machining method that corrodes metal with electrical sparks through 2 electrodes including Anode (part) and Cathode (tool), controlled by programming method. The cutting wire is controlled to move along the contour of the Descartes XY coordinate system, entering from the outside of the workpiece or being threaded through a pilot hole through the thickness of the workpiece.

CNC wire cutting is classified based on the material of the cutting wire:

  • Molybdenum wire cutting (molybdenum, molybdenum, saw wire cutting): Low cost, suitable for parts and molds that require medium precision.
  • Copper wire cutting: Used for a higher surface finish of parts and molds, so the cost is higher than molybdenum wire cutting.

Wire cutting is suitable for processing thin, simple parts that can stack material sheets on top of each other for 1 precise cut. Mold details, mortars and pestles with square and sharp edges or complex curves, and high frequency gaps are prioritized for CNC wire cutting. The quotation of CNC wire cutting method depends on quantity, complexity, surface requirements, and tolerance requirements. In Hanoi City, there are some reputable CNC wire cutting service providers such as CNC-Vina, Tidco, Emetech etc.

3. CNC plasma cutting

CNC plasma cutting is the process of using a high-velocity jet of ionized gas (plasma) to create energy to cut conductive materials. Based on different requirements of the cutting surface, manufacturers use different gas flows:

  • Normal gas (cleaned): To cut carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum (for medium finished products, suitable for small workshops and low budget);
  • Oxygen gas: To cut carbon steel, the surface is more beautiful than cutting method by normal gas;
  • Nitrogen gas: To cut aluminum, stainless steel with a thickness of less than 0.5mm;
  • Argon - Hydrogen gas: To cut aluminum, stainless steel with a thickness of over 0.5mm, for a smooth and bright cutting surface (high operating costs, high equipment consumption costs);

Some applications of CNC plasma cutting:

  • Heavy machinery: Steel structures, prefabricated house frames, shipbuilding, electrical conductive plate details;
  • Civil machinery: Kitchen equipment, agricultural tools, machine tools;
  • Decorative interior: Cutting patterns for metal gates or doors;
  • Advertising: Cutting signs, panels etc.;
